Housing and Urban Development
My grandmother's house needs some repairs, but she can't afford to make them. Can the City of Modesto help?
- The City of Modesto operates an Emergency Home Repair Program (EHRP) with Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds. The EHRP provides financial and technical assistance to repair or eliminate emergency conditions, including critical health and safety hazards, and to provide assistance for disabled persons in making their homes more accessible. The home must be located within Modesto city limits and household income must meet eligibility requirements as a low-income household. The EHRP is only available to owner-occupants. Types of eligible repairs include: roofing, weatherization, heating, plumbing, electrical, ramps, handrails, widening of doorways, etc. Financial assistance is in the form of low-interest loans. When are inspections needed?
- Irrigation lines need to be inspected before the trenches are backfilled with soil. The final inspection will take place when the landscaping and irrigation have been completed and you are ready to close out your project.

How do I get to the Modesto Centre Plaza?
- The Modesto Centre Plaza is located in downtown Modesto, adjacent to the 15-story DoubleTree Hotel. The main entrance to the Centre Plaza is at the intersection of 10th and K Streets, across from Starbucks and Brenden Theatres.
From Highway 99 -
Northbound: Take Central Modesto exit. The off-ramp merges into Sixth Street. Stay on Sixth Street for five (5) blocks. Turn right on K Street. Go four (4) blocks to entrance of the Centre Plaza (10th and K Streets).
Southbound: Take Maze Boulevard exit. At the top of the off-ramp is a signal light. Go one block further and turn left on K Street. Go five (5) blocks to the Centre Plaza entrance (10th and K Streets).

How do I report homeless people in the park?
- The homeless have the right to be in the park from dawn until dusk. If they are pan handling or harassing people, then it becomes a code enforcement issue and you should call the non-emergency police number at (209) 572-9500. The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department has no authority to remove the homeless from parks.
Who do I call to report graffiti, vandalism or broken equipment?
- Call 911 if you witness graffiti or vandalism.
To report graffiti call the Graffiti Abatement Hotline at (209) 342-2259.
To report vandalism or broken equipment (including play structures and irrigation equipment) call the Park Services Division at (209) 342-2248.

Do I need to make a reservation to hold an event in all City of Modesto parks?
- Reservations are required at 11 of the City's 75 parks. The parks that require a reservation are: Beardbrook Park, Beyer Park, Davis Park, Downey Park, E. LaLoma Park, Graceada Park, Legion Park, Mancini Park, McClatchy Square, Mellis Park, and Tuolumne River Regional Park. The other 64 parks are available on a first-come, first-served basis. How do I register for a class?
- There are four easy ways to register for a class:
- eConnect internet registration allows you to register from the convenience of your own home.
- Mail the registration form with full payment.
- Drop off the registration form with full payment at 1010 Tenth Street, Suite 4400, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
- Fax in the signed registration form with full payment (Visa or MasterCard only) to (209) 342-4705.
Is there a financial assistance program for classes/activities available through the City of Modesto?
- Yes! The financial assistance program is called Leisure Bucks. This youth/senior/disabled recreational financial program is for individuals wishing to participate in a City of Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department program or in a City approved youth sports organization. Leisure Bucks is available to those living in HUD designated low-income neighborhoods in Modesto, those receiving TANF, or those showing proof that the family/household income is at or below current HUD low income guidelines. If eligible, financial assistance may be granted to pay for a portion of the registration fees for classes and programs that cost $5 and above. - The green can is for yard waste (grass, leaves, brush and tree trimmings), food waste and paper and cardboard products only (junk mail, shredded paper, magazines, phone books, computer paper, cereal or tissue boxes, etc.) Do not use plastic bags of any kind.

How do I dispose of TVs and computer monitors?
- CRTs and other electronic waste can be recycled at the Stanislaus County Household Hazardous Waste Facility. The facility is located at 1716 Morgan Road (near Highway 99 and Hatch Road) and is open for drop-offs every Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (except holidays). How do I dispose of tires?
- Free waste tire events are available when state grants permit. Contact your garbage company and request a tire coupon to be mailed to you. Take the coupon and tires to your garbage company on any of the dates listed on the coupon. NEVER carry more than nine (9) waste tires in your vehicle. For more information, call (209) 577-5494.
How do I schedule a bulky item appointment?
- Contact your garbage company to schedule your collection appointment. Items are picked up by appointment only twice per calendar year. Please see the bulky item pick up page for a list of acceptable and unacceptable items. Do not place your items in the street until the night before your appointment. This program is for City of Modesto residential garbage customers only, with current, active garbage service.

Where can I buy the City's compost?
- Compost is available for purchase at the City's Compost Facility, 7001 Jennings Road. Call (209) 538-2557 for more information.
Now through November 2010, 35 lb bags of compost are available for purchase Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Senior Citizens Center, 211 Bodem Street. The bags are $3.00 plus tax.

- Concerts, receptions, social gatherings, fund-raisers, new car displays, live TV broadcasts, press conferences, rallies, athletic demonstrations and candlelight vigils are some examples of the types of events that have been held at Tenth Street Plaza.
Where is Tenth Street Plaza located?
- Tenth Street Plaza is on Tenth Street, between J and K Streets in downtown Modesto. It is one city block in front of the City and County building and is blocked to through traffic for pedestrian use only.
