Biography
Mayor Garrad Marsh
Garrad Marsh is a life-long resident of Modesto. His great-grandparents immigrated to Modesto
in the early 1900's where they farmed land on what is now Coffee Road. Garrad and his wife Dallas
have four grown children and five grandchildren. Two children live locally and are raising their
families here, one lives and works in Boston with her husband, and the third is attending UC San
Diego.
After graduating from high school during the Vietnam era, Garrad joined the US Navy and served
with a top-secret clearance for almost seven years aboard nuclear submarines. Following his return
to Modesto, he attended Modesto Junior College, graduating with honors. Transferring to the
University of California, Berkeley, he earned his B.A. degree in Business Administration in
1978.
Garrad returned to Modesto and joined his family business, McHenry Bowl, built in 1959. There he
worked through all levels of the business, until his departure in 1984 to return to UC Berkeley to
work toward his Masters degree. Completing his MBA in May of 1986, Garrad negotiated a successful
buy-out of McHenry Bowl. For the past twenty-four years, he has been President and General Manager
of the bowl, a company that provides over fifty area jobs.
Garrad has been active in Modesto since returning from college. He co-chaired the traffic study of
Forward Modesto IV. He attended and graduated from the Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Modesto Program.
From 1994 through 2002, he served on the Board of Zoning Adjustment, attaining the position of chair.
He was appointed to the City of Modesto Planning Commission in 2002, and served until he was elected to
the Modesto City Council. He is at the end of his second four-year term on the Council.
Garrad is on the board of the Friends of Modesto Police Youth Services, and has served as Past
President. He is a board member of the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE); Stanislaus
Partners in Education; Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA); and Community Hospice. Garrad earned
his teaching credential in Mathematics from Chapman College in 1989, and taught for a short
period at Somerset Middle School. He mentored at Kirschen Elementary School, and still tutors
at-risk students.
